What is Prader-Willi Syndrome (PWS)?
- A non-inherited birth defect that affects appetite, growth, metabolism and behavior
- First identified in 1956 by Swiss doctors Prader, Labhart and Willi
- About one in 15,000 is affected
- Characterized by an insatiable appetite and aberrant behaviors
- About 95% function in the mild developmentally disabled range
- Most have a high pain threshold and are unaware of injuries and infection
ARC of Alachua County believes that a comprehensive treatment plan with effective programming can help all individuals with PWS achieve their unique potential and lead full, active and dignified lives. We have been treating individuals with PWS since 1987. The ARC's program addresses three key areas: diet, exercise and behavior management.
