Prader-Willi Syndrome Treatment - Diet
Counting Calories
Counting calories gives as much freedom as possible with food choices. A base calorie allotment is set by a physician experienced with PWS in consultation with a registered dietitian. It is the consumer's responsibility to budget their calories throughout the day. Adhering to the diet becomes the individual's responsibility, not the staff's. This establishes the behaviors necessary to maintain a lifetime of controlled eating.
Food Planning Control
In addition to planning their diets, our consumers prepare their own plates, measuring out each serving. All food preparation is monitored by staff and must adhere to calorie prescriptions. An accurate caloric value for each food must be obtained from a reputable source. Food is measured by weight or volume to ensure that the portions are correct.
Confront the Issue
We do not shield our consumers from food or a discussion of food. Food is the most important issue in their lives and must be dealt with daily.
